If you’ve just purchased an older property and you’re planning a renovation, getting the electrics sorted early is one of the smartest decisions you can make.
Here at Thames Valley Electricians, we recently completed a full rewire on a 1900s 3-bedroom terraced property in Bracknell, after an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) carried out prior to purchase flagged that the installation required a full upgrade.
Our client had recently moved in and wanted to bring the electrics up to modern standards before starting the rest of their renovation — exactly the right approach.
Why a Full Rewire Was Needed
The home’s electrical wiring was circa 45 years old and showing signs of degeneration. This was identified during an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) carried out prior to the purchase of the property.
During the rewire, we uncovered:
- Multiple hidden junction boxes under the floors
- Damaged and deteriorated cabling
- Poor installation methods from previous work
- Not enough sockets for modern living
The existing installation wasn’t just outdated — it didn’t meet our client’s needs in terms of the number and positioning of electrical points required for modern living.
A full rewire allowed us to remove the old, dated wiring and install a new, safe electrical system designed for modern living.
Designing the Installation Around the Client
A good rewire isn’t just about replacing cables — it’s about designing the system around how the home will actually be used.
We worked closely with our client to plan:
- Socket locations based on furniture layouts and day-to-day use
- Lighting layouts to improve both function and feel
- Allowances for future upgrades, including a planned kitchen renovation
In the kitchen, we installed additional circuits ready for future works. This means no need to cut into finished walls later on — saving time, money, and disruption.
We also upgraded key areas with:
- LED spotlights in the kitchen and bathroom for a clean, even spread of light
- USB sockets in convenient locations for charging devices
- Mains-wired smoke alarms for improved safety throughout the home
Consumer Unit Upgrade & Safety Improvements
As part of the rewire, we installed a new 18th Edition compliant consumer unit, bringing the property fully up to current standards.
This included:
- Individual RCBO protection – so a fault only affects one circuit rather than the whole house
- Surge protection – helping protect modern appliances and electronics
This isn’t just about meeting regulations — it’s about giving the homeowner confidence that their electrical system is safe, reliable, and built to last.
How the Work Was Carried Out
The project was completed in just one week, including all chasing and making good.
- The property was occupied, but empty during working hours
- Work was carefully planned to keep disruption to a minimum
- All wall chases were professionally made good by our plasterer, leaving the property ready for decorating
This level of organisation makes a big difference on projects like this and helps keep everything moving smoothly for the client.
The End Result
The client now has:
- A safe, modern electrical system
- A layout that works for how they live
- Improved lighting throughout the home
- Capacity for future upgrades without further disruption
Most importantly, they can now move forward with their renovation knowing the electrics have been done properly and won’t need revisiting later.
Client Review
Fantastic experience! Luke and his team rewired my entire house and were a pleasure to deal with. They were great communicators, punctual and finished the job right on schedule. The work was neat, tidy and professionally executed. If you want a team that does what they say they’re going to do, look no further. 10/10! Many thanks Luke, I’m really delighted.
